Fear Fighting {Book Review}

“Fear Fighting” is a Christian book filled with essays about accepting God’s power to overcome your fears. There are chapters on worry, anxiety, comparison, and the need to be in control.

To be honest, this was not my favorite book. But I also feel this book has the potential to change lives. Let me explain.

The writing was poetic but confusing, like a stream of consciousness. I’m a tactical and logical person and often found myself coming to the end of a chapter knowing little more about taking steps to address fear.

There was a vagueness in the stories presented. I wanted to know more about the personal stories (i.e. “What happened? Why? Did things get better?”) and I often didn’t know what was going on in a Bible story. I grew up learning the main stories of the Bible but by no means am I a Bible expert. I would’ve loved to have more background and details.

My favorite concept is the “Pendulum of Pride.” The pendulum swings one way and we think we’re the greatest. In an instant, it starts to swing the other way and we think we’re the worst.

I do this all the time. I’ll sign up for activities, excited to try new things and meet new people, feeling like I have something to offer the world. But so often, before the event arrives, the pendulum has swung the other way, and I think that I’m a burden. For the first time in my life, I became deeply aware of this vicious cycle while reading “Fear Fighting.”So many of us hold ourselves back because of our deeply seated fears. Sometimes all we need is someone to show us we’re not alone and to give us encouragement and the tools to make that first step. This book can do that. Kelly Balarie shares her struggles and provides prayers and tips. Read an excerpt and see if you enjoy her writing style. If you do, I think you’d like this book.

Have you read a book on overcoming fear that you’d like to share? Let me know!
